February Info

Math: We are currently working on the short Math unit (Number).  It focusses on multiplication (3 digit x 2 digit), division (4 digit / 1 digit) and rates and ratios.

Science: We are trying to quickly finish the Properties and Changes in Matter Unit.  This will hopefully be completed within the next 2 weeks.

Social Studies: We will start Social Studies once the Science unit is complete.  It will focus on the topic of: INTERACTIONS OF INDIGENOUS
PEOPLES AND EUROPEANS PRIOR TO 1713, IN WHAT WOULD EVENTUALLY BECOME CANADA.

Science Fair: Projects are due next week.  We have been talking about some of the projects the students have been working on as well as the upcoming due date.  I look forward to see their final projects.

Math – Patterns

Welcome back, I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break. Our next unit in math is focusing on pattern. It will take about 2 to 3 weeks to complete.  Our main learning expectations are the following:

We are learning to:

    • identify and describe repeating, growing and shrinking patterns in real life
    • determine and extend pattern rules for repeating, growing and shrinking patterns
    • make predictions and identify missing elements in repeating, growing, and shrinking  patterns
    • create and translate repeating, growing , and shrinking patterns using using different representations
    • create patterns to show relationships between whole numbers and decimal hundredths

SPIRIT DAY

The week on December 19 to December 23 be 1 week of spirit days. Here is a list of the different events for the week.

SPIRIT WEEK December 19th – 22

Monday–dress for your favourite winter activity

Tuesday–Dress up for your favourite holiday!

Wednesday–Warm and Cozy Day

Friday – Long Winter’s Nap– cozy bedtime stuff

Science Fair Information

We are having a science fair this year.  Students are expected to create and submit a project.  The due date is February 13, 2023. Here is some information that you may find useful. As well, on our school website you can find links to science fair information and ideas.

Math Unit 3 – Geometric Reasoning

We have started our next unit in Math. It is estimated to take 3 to 4 weeks to complete.  It is Unit 3 Geometric Reasoning. It is divided into 2 parts. Part A is on measuring and the use of units.  The main learning outcomes are:

  1. Use appropriate metric units to estimate and measure length, mass, and capacity.
  2. Solve problems that involve converting larger metric units into smaller ones, and describe the base ten relationships among metric units.

Part B is on geometric shapes and angles. The main learning outcomes are”

  1. Compare angles and determine their relative size using non-standard units.
  2. Use benchmark angles to estimate the size of an angle.
  3. Use a protractor to measure and construct angles up to 180°.
  4. Identify geometric properties of triangles, and construct different types of triangles when given side or angle measurements.
  5. Identify and construct congruent triangles, rectangles, and parallelograms.
  6. Draw top, front, and side views of objects, and match drawings with objects.

Field Trip – Science Centre

We have a confirmation of our first school trip.  It is set for Wednesday, November 23, 2022. The junior division will be going to the Toronto Science Centre.  The cost is $27 and must be paid using Cash Online by November 20th. A permission form will be sent home today.  As well, a copy of the permission form is attached below.  If you have issues with accessing the school’s Cash Online App, please phone the office for assistance. When using Cash Online, you can use the permission sheet attached to the app.

We will require volunteers for this trip.  You have to be an approved school volunteer.  You will need to have a criminal check to be placed on the approved school volunteer list.  For more information on how to become an approved school volunteer please phone the office for more information.

Online Learning

The School Board has informed us that students will be learning from home for the week of November 7th to November 11th. Work will be posted on the google classroom.  We have been told that Monday, November 7th will be asynchronous.  Starting on Tuesday, we will be starting some lessons synchronously.  We will follow the classroom schedule. I will post the schedule in the google classroom, classwork section.

Friday, November 4th

On Tuesday, November 1 our class went to the library to use the computers.  We all signed into our google accounts using our student usernames and passwords.  We then went to our google apps to access the google classroom.  The students then accepted my Grade 5 classroom invention.   On Friday, there will be work posted in our google classroom.  Students are to work asynchronously (independently) on the work assigned.
